• Deskripsi Lagu : Civil War
Pada intro lagu grup Guns N' Roses berjudul Civil War, ada narasi berbunyi, "What we've got here is failure to communicate. Some men, you just can't reach. So, you get what we had here last week. Which is the way he wants it, well, he gets it. An' I don't like it any more than you men." Narasi itu berasal dari filem Cool Hand Luke [Warner Bros Pictures | 1967]. Baris pertama dari kalimat Luke itu, "What we've got here is failure to communicate" sendiri telah menjadi semacam ungkapan di Amerika, meski kalimat itu sendiri memiliki kesalahan gramatikal ketika pertama kali muncul namun 'bisa diterima' di beberapa bagian Amerika.
Filem CHL yang musiknya dikerjakan oleh seorang Lalo Schifrin yang juga telah mengerjakan musik untuk filem-filem Dirty Harry-nya Clint Eastwood ini, diadaptasi dari novel berjudul sama karya seorang Donn Pearce . Pada awalnya Pearce menjual hak cipta novelnya kepada Warner Bros. yang kemudian mempekerjakan Pearce untuk menulis skrip filem bagi ceritanya itu. Pearce menulis buku ini berdasarkan pengalamannya sebagai seorang 'chain gang'* di penjara Florida. Dia menjual ceritanya kepada Warner senilai 80ribu dolar Amerika dan kemudian dibayar sebesar 15ribu dolar untuk kerjanya membuat naskah filem dari novel itu.
CHL dibintangi oleh Paul Newman (26 Januari 1925 - 26 September 2008 / 83 tahun) sebagai Lucas 'Luke' Jackson. Newman sendiri telah terlibat dalam dunia cinema setidaknya pada 1954 ketika ia membintangi filem berjudul The Silver Chalice [Warner Bros | 1954]. Dan sejak itu ia telah membintangi puluhan filem di Holliwood selain ia juga memproduseri dan menyutradarai tidak kurang dari selusin judul filem. Keterlibatannya dalam sejarah perfileman Amerika menyebabkannya pada 2003 ditempatkan pada urutan 30 pada daftar 100 pahlawan terbesar dalam sejarah sinema Amerika oleh AFI's 100 Years... 100 Heroes and Villains.** Dan pada 2006 Cool Hand Luke sendiri ditempatkan pada peringkat 71 America's Most Inspir ing Movies dalam daftar 100 Years…100 Cheers: America's Most Inspiring Movies oleh American Film Institute .
Terlepas dari berbagai kontroversi dan kritik yang dituainya karena menampilkan banyak visualisasi kekerasan, CHL segera menjadi box office setelah dluncurkan. Filem ini masuk dalam jajaran filem-filem
"anti-heroisme" , yakni tokoh utama bersikap antagonis, tidak sejalan dengan pemahaman awam tentang kebaikan, dan memilih cara-cara yang jahat demi kebenaran yang diyakininya.
Tentang Lagunya
Lagu Civil War muncul secara resmi pada album GNR tahun 1991, Use Your Illusion II [Geffen Records]. Sebenarnya telah muncul sebelumnya pada album kompilasi bertajuk Nobody's Child Romanian Angel Appeal pada 1990 di bawah label Warner Bros, dimana GNR 'berbagi' album ini dengan -antaranya- Elton John, The Bee Gees, Paul Simon & George Harrison, Billy Idol, Stevie Wonder , dan Eric Clapton . Album Nobody's Child ini dikeluarkan atas usaha Romanian Angel Appeal Foundation , sebuah yayasan yang didirikan oleh Olivia Harrison bersama ketiga istri (dan janda) personil Beatles lainnya: Barbara Bach, Yoko Ono and Linda McCartney) pada bulan April 1990.
Civil War adalah lagu berisi kecaman dan protes terhadap perang, albumnya juga adalah album charity untuk anak-anak Rumania yang menjadi yatim karena perang. Para pemusik kelas dunia ini memang bicara tentang ide-ide, tidak tentang permesuman layaknya kebiasaan pemusik populer Indonesia saat ini. Praktis, setelah era Iwan Fals, Ebiet G. Ade, dan juga generasi rock a la Log Zhelebour berlalu, kita hampir tidak lagi memiliki pemusik yang bisa memperkaya budi kita. Gagal Paham. :D
